NAAATT History

Amateur Athletic Association

The Amateur Athletic Association of Trinidad and Tobago (AAA) organised national championships from 1946 to 1962. These succeeded the Empire Day meetings held from the start of the century until 1945.

The AAA did not stage championships after 1962 due to internal politics within the organisation.

Championships were again held in 1969 and 1970 under the auspices of the National Athletes Union (NAU) who facilitated the formation of the National Amateur Athletic Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAA) in 1971.

Association of Athletics Administrations

The NAAA formally re-introduced national championships in 1972. The 1990 championships were cancelled due to the declaration of a state of emergency in the country.

In 2009, the association in keeping with the governing body for the sport rebranding, kept the acronym NAAA, eliminating Amateur from the name.

The new NAAA is now known as the National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad and Tobago.
