East meets West at Milo Games

Excitement is brewing for young track and field athletes ahead of next week's Kelvin Nancoo Primary School Games carded to be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. The West Zone will take place on Tuesday while the East Zone will be on Thursday (March 8). Action starts at 9 am on each day.

At the launch yesterday at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Mucurapo, it was announced that sponsor Nestle T&T Limited and Nestle Caribbean Incorporated has increased its contribution, extending to the East Zone, to the annual MILO Games, which has been renamed again in recognition of Nancoo for his role in creating and investing in the annual primary schools athletics event.

Senior Consumer Marketing Manager Geysha Thomas-Davis said, "This year we have invested $120,000 into these Games, as a significant contribution toward the future of our youth.

"At this time when our young children and our society at large are faced with so many negative forces, we believe that engaging in sporting activities, being part of a team and focusing on what is good, can only help to keep them motivated and committed to living a healthier lifestyle.

"We have now extended the scope of sponsorship and presented a cheque for $150,000 to both Games, 'East Meets West'."

Some 22 schools are expected to participate this year in the 31st edition of the West Games while 19 schools will do battle in the first Kelvin Nancoo Primary School Games for the East.

Nancoo said, "East is close to my heart and I appreciate their (Nestle) involvement with the East Zone and I expect that they will rise in time to come."

Denise D'Abadie, head of Corporate Communication, Nestle, said that she is pleased with the decision by the organising committee to officially rename these Games.

"Nancoo has invested the last 30 years leading this organising committee and working with each of the primary schools within Port of Spain and environs to develop the athletic talents of our nation's youth.

"It is because of his drive and commitment that we have seen these Games grow from strength to strength over the years."

Nancoo, the Games' live-wire, acknowledged the honour saying, "It feels great, it feels like people really appreciate the things that you have done. I have given and I continue to give, and I think it's a really good accolade."

Minister in the Ministry of Education, Dr Lovell Francis commended Nestle for their contribution to sport and education in the country. He lauded Nancoo as the most organised and committed teacher/coach that he has ever seen.

Asked if he envisioned that the Games would have lasted this long and also serve as a feeder for athletes in T&T, Nancoo bluntly said, "Yes, I did. That was the plan. We wanted to build and keep building and we haven't stopped. We're going to get even better."
