NAAA SELECTION CRITERIA The General Selection Policy is to be read in conjunction with the selection policies for the specific event. Both policies will be used as a basis for team selection.
GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION OF TRINIDAD & TOBAGO (NAAA)
1) The Selection Committee shall only have regard to athletes’ performances that are properly verified and recorded by the Records Committee/Statisticians of the Association. The following relevant information of the performances must be forwarded.
Ř The date of the competition Ř The weather conditions Ř The place of competition and the type of track surface Ř The method of timekeeping used Ř Wind Gauge readings where appropriate Ř The date of birth of the athlete if in specific age-group events.
In furnishing information to the selectors, the Records Committee/Statistician should provide them with performance data achieved overseas if the information appears in journals recognized by the Association of Track and Field Statisticians, or the information relevant to such performances are verified by the controlling body of the meeting. Clubs/Schools are asked to ensure that wind gauges and electronic timing are available and used at all meetings where athletes’ performances are likely to be considered for National Team selection; if available video recording should be used to record performances.
2) Except where a selection trial is held for selection and the particular selection criteria for the team states otherwise, no one performance or place in a particular event or competition, shall result in an athlete gaining automatic selection as a member of a team.
3) To be selected on any Trinidad and Tobago team for major competitions, it is a requirement that the athlete will have participated in the following competitions:
a. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO CHAMPIONSHIP relevant to the intended competition - unless an exemption is granted for not competing.
b. Other meeting designated by the National Selectors.
4) During the period between the announcement of the team and the date of departure, athletes must demonstrate that they are physically fit, and likely to compete at a level appropriate to the competition(s) for which they have been selected. During this time, assessment shall be made from time to time as to the athlete’s standard of fitness, and their preparation for the event. Such assessment shall be directed and under the control of the team Management in conjunction with the Selectors. If as a result of such assessment, the athlete is not deemed to be at a level required to retain their place on a selected team, the Manager shall immediately notify the Chairman of Selections who will then confer with the selectors on the athlete’s position in such a team.
5) Where a designated trial is to be conducted immediately prior to the announcement of the team, all athletes wishing to be selected must compete in such a trial in the events for which they wish to be selected, unless they have an unusual and acceptable exemption agreed to by the Executive. Exemption will usually only be granted where the athlete is in university overseas or has a medical reason for not competing, or has a special compassionate reason. The athlete may be required to undergo a medical examination with a medical officer nominated by the Association.
6) An athlete who resides outside of Trinidad and Tobago and who wishes to be selected in a Trinidad and Tobago team must provide to the selection panel through the Secretary, performances verified by the controlling body under whose jurisdiction the performances were made.
7) a) No Wind-aided performances will be considered. Particular attention shall be paid to standards attained in meetings such as the Trinidad and Tobago Championship and other designated meetings or trials.
b) Where more athletes better the qualifying standard in an event than entry places. (i.e. 3 for World Championship and Olympic and 2 for other events) The selectors may use the placing at the Trial or Championship to name the athletes who will compete.
c) Athletes must meet the basic International event entry standards for the specific events, before consideration is given to other selection criteria .
8) INTERNATIONAL TEAMS When an invitation is received by the Association for a specific number of athletes to compete overseas or for an athlete or athletes to compete in a particular event, the Association shall refer the invitation to the selection panel.
9) TEAM EVENTS If in the opinion of the selection panel, the overall standard of available athletes does not warrant a team being selected, any athletes who have achieved automatic selection, in accordance with the published criteria, will be notified. If after the date of selection of any team for a team event, withdrawals for any reason; make a team uncompetitive or incomplete, and suitable replacements cannot be found by the selection panel, the team may by withdrawn and the selected athletes notified. If the organizers of the competition permit individuals to be entered, the selection panel may nominate suitably qualified individuals.

Six athletes will in general be selected for each relay team. Where practicable, a training squad should be selected as far in advance as is possible. Commitment to the squad will be an important factor in final selection.
11) Any athlete seeking, or having achieved selection, must keep the Association’s Secretary informed at all times of their contact address, telephone numbers and email addresses. Any changes to these details, particularly if traveling overseas, must be advised immediately.
